The seat is currently vacant (in transition). Here's the situation:

Current officeholder through this term: The seat was held by Republican Ashley Hinson, but she left the seat to pursue Sen. Joni Ernst's Senate seat — so as of now the district is essentially in an open-seat race, with Hinson running for Senate instead.

2026 general election: It's a competitive open-seat race. Democratic state Rep. Lindsay James will face Republican Sen. Charlie McClintock... wait, actually she'll face Joe Mitchell, who won the Republican nomination in the June 2026 primary.

To clarify the matchup: Joe Mitchell won the Republican nomination for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District, defeating State Sen. Charlie McClintock, in the race to succeed Rep. Ashley Hinson, who left the seat to pursue Sen. Joni Ernst's position in the Senate. On the Democratic side, Lindsay James won the Democratic primary, defeating Kathy Dolter and Clint Twedt-Ball, and will face Republican Joe Mitchell in November.

So bottom line: you don't currently have a newly elected representative for IA-02 — Hinson is technically still the incumbent representative through the end of this Congress, but she's not running for re-election to the House. The general election between Mitchell (R) and James (D) will be held on November 3, 2026, and whoever wins will take office in January 2027.
